Project #3

Google Earth is a software program that allows you and your students to view satellite imagery, maps, terrain and buildings in 3-D.  There are other options that allow you as the teacher to view Mars, the moon, and under water pictures of the entire ocean.  The outer space option allows you to create and view planetarium-like shows and can even track your students' journeys through space.  This also allows you to map out, track, and save specific tour details that then can be accessed by students, which helps with field trips.

Assignment #7

     1) The most exciting and interactive technology that I have by far enjoyed the most is the software imovie.  This is a great editing tool to make some amazing instructional video clips.  Using technology in the classroom besides movies will be great also.  For example, the idea of a class website with a syllabus and the homework assignments posted there for easy access for a student that will be absent, etc. is a great idea.  This allows him/her to download and print the assignment and then not have the excuse, "I was gone!"
     2) I really like the technological ideas of blogs, class websites, and fellow teacher collaboration to aid students with their individual learning experiences.  Google reader is great because I was able to follow fellow students and their uses of technology in the classroom and use their ideas and also avoid some of the pitfalls that they encountered.
     3) As far as TESOL is concerned I believe that video/audio recording, as well as, Jeopardy (power point) and text reading sofware can really help students improve their English.  Podcasts might be a possible application to learning as well.  Biology could incoroporate virtual dissection labs, animation and videos explaining difficult concepts, and experiments that are way too dangerous to perform in class.
     4) IPT 286 and the principles that I have learned through trial and error will not only help me in the classroom, but help me with other technological projects that I might want to use in my personal life.  One of which is imovie.  On a professional level, I have learned that the technology that is available to teachers is truly vast.  Google earth is one example of using new software that I didn't know about before and using it to further explain or show exactly where we will be going for field trips.  I think that the greatest thing that I have learned is peer corraboration and collaboration.  The more people you know that use technology in the classroom effectively the more effectively you can incorporate different media presentations, etc. into that environment yourself.
     5) I will definetaley use a class website, videos, animation, and text to speech technologies in my career.  I plan to be working over seas and so trans-global communication capabilities like skype, ichat, or google chat will be a helpful tool for interviews and guest speakers in class.  I think that lds.org and the application/programs that allow you to follow along in your scriptures as you listen to the voice that is reading the text can be very helpful as well.  That is at least one example that would help with TESOL.

Assignment #6

There are different websites that allow you to do crosswords or word searches.  Most of them require you to register, but after you register the different programs are free to use and access.  I remember in school that many times crosswords and word searches were used as a break to look up words and definitions as either homework or in class activities.  I wouldn't use them all the time, but maybe a fun break during the holidays.
One software tool that I have found useful is google earth, which could possibly allow my students and their parents as well as administrators through whom you are getting approval, to view exactly where you are going for field trips to collect leaves and bugs for collections as school projects.  This is the software that I will be using.

Internet Safety:
Using common sense as well as some tricks like jerrywhiting13 at gmail.com to avoid any spiders, etc. to spam you have helped a lot.  I believe that the upcoming generation of youth really need to not only be taught these principles, but realize that facebook and texting can be very threatening to identity theft and that caution and prudence should be exercised always.

Assignment #5

This is a very great tool that will be best used in the classroom for interviews with people that are clear across the globe.  In light that I will be working over seas, this technology will prove quite useful.  I really liked using google chat, but when my dad was in Thailand the time difference as well as a little bit of lag on the video proved troubling and annoying.
My video is coming along well and will be posted to my blog soon!  So stay tuned!

Assignment #4 Making a Video

Well, creating a storyboard and deciding on whether or not the aid of technology will help or distract from the learning experience has been very educational for me.  So far I have been able to download an add-on for firefox, which enables me now to manipulate/splice/edit movies for my students.  The actual process of creating a movie has been an adventure unto itself.  Thus far I have spent an hour or so preparing for my video and two or three hours actually working on it.  I've decided to use I-movie and it proves to be very intuitive and user-friendly.

Assignment #2

Using a class website could be a two-edged sword.  For easy access of homework, syllabus, reading or lab assignments, and watching videos, this could be very helpful.  This would only helpful though IF students had easy access to a computer, which most students do.   But I can see this maybe leading to the responsibilities as teachers being neglected and the concerns of the student to be "directed to the website."  There is a fine line and I know that I would use a class website like I have used Blackboard, to facilitate learning outcomes.
